Backing A Baby in Canada

Backing A Baby in Canada

This morning at Nabeelah’s school, I overheard the intern that recently started working in her class every Thursday talking about how I carried Filzah on my back. I had heard her talking about same last week and I smiled. One of Nabeelah’s teachers then told her it’s a ‘baby back carrier’ and it’s cute. It was actually the first time I heard someone refer to iro and oja as back carrier, so it was funny. Anyways, I was surprised and a bit pissed catching her ‘gossip’ about it again. So I jokingly asked if she is still fascinated by my ‘baby back carrier’. From her look, I could tell she was surprised I heard her.

She is one of the NUMEROUS people that keep asking, questioning or gossiping about how I back Filzah. Some genuinely find it cute, some are thrilled, some are bewildered, some look confused, some question it, some even look like they’d call the police. Sincerely, I have tire! I kuku have a stroller but God knows a stroller isn’t as comfortable as backing is for me. For instance, I park my car in a parking lot that is far from a place I am going to, I then start pushing a stroller with my hands, which hand will I use to hold my other children, aside that, I just find backing super easy, as per the African woman that I am and I’m used to this style more than the stroller.

That is how one young boy rudely told me he was sure my baby was not comfortable.

Though some people are thrilled when they see me, I met one lady inside an elevator last week and she was so cool with the idea and was telling me how she watches Africans on TV and how she likes how we do some things ingeniously (maybe she was truthful or not, I don’t know), she sha said she likes it.

Some of these people wanna make me loose my mind. What’s the big deal in having a child on the back? What difference does it make if a baby is in front, at the back or inside a stroller? So I asked Nabeel to do a video of me the other day, I did another video yesterday and asked Nabeelah to take a picture of me, so I can see if me backing Filzah looks weird. Have you had a similar experience before if you live outside Africa?
